The New York University men's tennis team was defeated by Hobart College 5-4 on Sunday, April 1, in Geneva, NY.
The Violets are now 3-4 this season.
Hobart got off to the faster start, winning two of the three doubles matches.
Connor Witty and
CJ Leong fell 8-3 in the first slot. At #2 doubles, the team of
Ting Yee Lai and
William Smithline scored an 8-5 victory.
Karamveer Dhillon and
Gerardo De La Concha were defeated 9-7 in third doubles.
In singles, NYU made a spirited comeback. However the Violets ultimately fell short.
At #1 singles, Witty pulled out a hard fought 7-5, 6-4 victory, while at #2 Leong also battled to prevail 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
James Dean fell 6-3, 6-4 in the third slot,
Ting Yee Lai earned a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the fourth slot, while Smithline fell 6-2, 6-3 in the fifth slot. In the deciding singles match, De La Concha failed to close it out, eventually falling 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
“I am very happy with how we did this weekend,” said NYU head coach
Horace Choy. “Yesterday we won a very tight match. However, today the tables were turned. You cannot win them all. We have to keep fighting, and our good form should continue.”
NYU will look to continue its run of good play when the squad travels to Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, on Wednesday, April 4.
