Men's Tennis Team Edges Rochester in Comeback Victory

Violets Improve to 3-3

Concha came back from a set down to win the deciding singles match.
The New York University men's tennis team won five of six singles matches and defeated the University of Rochester 5-4 on Saturday, March 31, in Rochester, NY.

The Violets are now 3-3 this season.

Despite the Violets prevailing, it was Rochester who got off to the faster start. In doubles action, Connor Witty teamed with CJ Leong in the first slot. but came up just short 9-8(2). At #2 doubles, the team of Ting Yee Lai and William Smithline lost 8-4, while Karamveer Dhillon and Gerardo De La Concha were defeated 8-0 in third doubles.

In singles, however, the Violets stepped it up, with #2 Leong, #3 James Dean and #4 Lai all winning in straight sets. At #1, Witty showed a lot of heart, coming back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. This placed NYU in the lead for the first time all day.

However, Rochester won the #5 singles match 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The match came down to De La Concha, who was playing at #6. Despite a slow start, he prevailed 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to give NYU the victory over its University Athletic Association rival.

“We started out very slow,” said head coach Horace Choy, “but I feel like once we got some quick wins in singles, Witty and De La Concha started to play more relaxed, which I think made the biggest difference.”

“I am very proud of how we fought," Choy added, "and I hope to continue this good form for the rest of the season.”

NYU will look to continue its run of good play when the squad travels to Hobart College in Geneva, NY, on Sunday, April 1.
