Women's Fencing Has Perfect Home Opener

Violets Go 2-0 Against Drew and Stevens

The New York University women's fencing team defeated Drew University and Stevens Institute of Technology in the home opener of the 2012-13 season on Thursday, November 29, at the Jerome Coles Sports Center.
 
The Violets defeated Drew in their first match, dominating all three weapons en route to a 22-5 victory. In the second match, the Violets left no points to spare as the team edged Stevens 14-13.
 
Highlights vs Drew:
 
- In foil, the women won 7-2. Audra Fox compiled a 3-0 record, while Kelly Ng went 2-0. Katherine Chen also finished the match unblemished, winning her only bout.
 
- In epee, the Violets were even more impressive, shutting out Drew 9-0. Christiana Lai, Gemma Dadourian and Jess Sherman all had perfect 2-0 showings, while Lyssie Parkhurst, Jennie Dubin-Rhodin and Jessica Korsgaard went 1-0.
 
- The women closed out the match going 7-2 in the sabre. Cari Lieberman, Jackie Leval and Ericka Persson had strong performances going 2-0, 2-0 and 2-1, respectively.
 
Highlights vs Stevens:
 
- The Violets won 5-4 in foil, led by Fox and Chen, who both compiled 2-1 records.
 
- In epee, the women struggled, falling to Drew 6-3. Both Parkhurst and Lai went 1-1.
 
- The Violets again had an impressive showing in the sabre, winning 6-3 and clinching the team's second victory on the night. Leval and Persson both capped off their perfect nights by going 3-0.

"Stevens was extremely tough and we had to fight our way back from a 13-11 deficit to win the match," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "It was a real nail-biter."
 
The Violets return back to action on Saturday, December 1, at the Vassar Invitational in Poughkeepsie, NY.
