Box Score
Despite taking the lead in the 80th minute, the sixth-ranked New York University men's soccer team dropped a game for the first time this season, falling 2-1 at New Jersey City University on Wednesday, October 3, in Jersey City, NJ.
In a back-and-forth battle played on a soggy grass field, the Violets (9-1) took the lead on
Kyle Green's goal with 10:24 to play. However, the Gothic Knights (9-4) scored in the 85th and 87th minutes to knock NYU from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Highlights
- Green's goal came on a give-and-go with
Paolo Luciano. After taking the short pass from Luciano, Green ripped a shot from 16 yards out that trickled in despite goalkeeper Sheldon Parkinson getting a hand on it.
- New Jersey City tied the contest with 5:32 to play on a corner, as Alec Metsch headed in Marco Avella's service.
- The Gothic Knights scored the eventual game winner just 1:47 later. After
Ryan Horch blocked Aboubacar Diawara's close-range shot in the box, the rebound was tucked under the crossbar by Nana Kofi Kusi.
- The Violets pressed to tie the score in the final minutes, getting a pair of good chances from
Mickey Ingerman and Luciano, but could not net the equalizer.
- Parkinson finished with eight saves for New Jersey City, while
Jonas Poster made four stops for NYU.
“We had a couple of chances to put them away, but their goalkeeper and central defender were outstanding,” said Head Coach
Joe Behan. “It's tough to play short touches and passes on that surface because the ball gets held up. We showed our inexperience today, but our players certainly will learn from it.”
The Violets return home on Saturday, October 6, for a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest against the University of Rochester. Game time is at 1:30 pm at Gaelic Park.
