Women's Swimming & Diving Starts the Season Strong

Violets Emerge Triumphant in Their First Meet

New York University's women's swimming & diving team had a positive start to its season, defeating SUNY Cortland 173-123 at the Palladium Athletic Facility on Saturday, October 20.

  This marked the third year in a row the Violets defeated the Red Dragons in their opening meet. 

Emily Doerner, one of the team's top performers during the 2011-12 season, returned to the pool without missing a beat. She won the 50-yard freestyle (24.93), the 100-yard freestyle (53.98) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.46).

For the divers, freshman Nealey Wallis won both the one- and three-meter dives with NCAA qualifying scores of 251.04 and 255.83, respectively.

Highlights

- Freshman Caitie Hawthorne began her collegiate career by winning both the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.58) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:18.12).

- Gabby Borutecene was victorious in the 200-yard IM (2:16.50) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:56.68).

- Savanna Keator won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.13.

- Kate Donnelly placed second in the one-meter dive with a personal-best score of 235.20.

"Terrific performance for our first-time diver," said Diving Coach Scott Donie. "Nealey certianly has gotten off to a great start."

The Violets will return to the pool on Friday and Saturday, October 26-27, at the University of Rochester Invitational in Rochester, NY.
