NYU defeated the University of Rochester 8-1 on Saturday, April 9. The win over Rochester, the #16 squad in the latest ITA Tennis DIII Northeast Regional Poll, marks the fourth consecutive win for the Violets (5-4).
NYU's rackets heated up quickly on Saturday, posting three early victories in doubles competition. Sophomore
Connor Witty and freshman
Steven Wu cruised 8-5 at #1, seniors
Raphael Namias and
Alex Stoler won 8-2 at #2, and senior
Matt Gross and sophomore
Bowen Xu notched an 8-2 victory at #3.
The Violets continued the strong play in singles matches. Witty, recently named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week for men's tennis, added a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win at first singles. Wu followed with a 6-4, 6-3 #2 singles win while Namias contributed a 6-1, 6-1 decision in the third slot.
Sophomore
Daniel Penaranda won 6-3, 6-1 at #4 singles while Xu took his #5 match 6-1, 6-3. Gross lost 7-5, 6-3 at sixth singles.
NYU looks to extend its streak to five when the team hosts Manhattanville College tomorrow at noon.
