The New York University men's tennis team posted an impressive 8-1 win over visiting Hobart College on Sunday, boosting its record to 2-4 on the season.

The Violets were coming off a 1-1 performance in the weekend's early action. NYU topped Drew University 5-4 on Thursday before losing to The College of New Jersey 5-4 on Saturday. Sunday's match wasn't nearly as close, with Horace Choy's squad making its dominant presence felt by the opposition.

"We came out very strong and never let up against them," said Choy. "We were clearly ready to play and our focus was indicative of that."

In doubles competition, seniors Alex Stoler and Raphael Namias took the top seed, winning 8-4. Senior Matt Gross teamed with freshman Bowen Xu in the #2 slot, taking their match 8-6 and giving NYU a 2-1 lead heading into the singles slate.

Hobart could not minimize the deficit as NYU took all six singles matches. Sophomore Connor Witty won 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2), 12-10 in the day's longest match at first singles. Freshman Steven Wu cruised 6-1, 6-2 at #2 singles while Namias posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the #3 slot.

In other action, sophomore Daniel Penaranda faced stiff competition in his 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win at fourth singles. Xu cushioned NYU's lead with a 6-1, 6-0 decision at #5 singles, and Gross took sixth singles 6-1, 6-3.

NYU's only loss of the day came at #3 doubles. The freshman tandem of Tim Wu and Daniel Huang lost 8-3.

The Violets, playing perhaps their best tennis of the 2010-11 season, return to the court on March 30, hosting the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. That match is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
