The College of New Jersey denied the New York University men's tennis team its first winning streak of the season, winning 5-4 in Ewing, NJ.

NYU (1-4) narrowly missed pulling off the upset over an undefeated TCNJ squad (4-0), the ninth-ranked team in the latest ITA Division III Men's Northeast Regional Poll. The Violets lost two doubles matches by a combined four games while losses in the #2 and #6 singles slots required extra games in order to determine a winner.

"It was an excellent match all around with both teams really giving their best efforts," said NYU head coach Horace Choy. "Unfortunately, someone had to lose."

Choy and his NYU team were down 2-1 early on Friday, following doubles action. The tandem of sophomore Connor Witty and freshman Steven Wu kept things close, prevailing 9-7 in the #1 slot.

In other action, seniors Raphael Namias and Alex Stoler lost 8-6 in second doubles. Senior co-captain Matt Gross and freshman Bowen Xu dropped their #3 doubles match 8-6.

The Violets did take three singles victories. Witty took #1 singles with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 decision while Namias won his #3 match 6-1, 7-5. Sophomore Daniel Penaranda tallied NYU's most lopsided victory, cruising 6-0, 6-4 at fourth singles.

Despite pushing his opponent to three sets, Stoler, who is also a co-captain for NYU, fell 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 6-2 at #6 singles.

The Violets make their return on Sunday, hosting Hobart College at the Stadium Tennis Center at Mill Pond in the Bronx.
