The New York University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season behind a surge of young talent, earning a 5-3 victory at Drew University on Thursday, March 24.
Singles competition proved decisive as the Violets (1-3) were able to to take four out of five matches. In the #1 slot, sophomore
Connor Witty rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win. Senior
Raphael Namias cruised 6-0, 6-2 at third singles.
In other action, NYU sophomore
Daniel Penaranda prevailed in a three-set thriller, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 at #4 singles. Freshman
Bowen Xu won 6-4, 6-4 at fifth singles.
"It was definitely a long day for us, but it was also very rewarding," said NYU head coach
Horace Choy.
The Violets did drop two of three doubles matches, with Witty and freshman
Steven Wu providing the lone victory (8-6) in the #1 slot.
"Conner's match was big for us," added Choy. " We fell into a 2-1 hole after doubles, but he was able to tie it up, and we maintained our focus the rest of the day."
NYU returns to the court on Friday to face The College of New Jersey at 1:00 pm.
