Box Score
The University of Chicago's Matt Johnson connected on a three-pointer, the last of his 39 points, with 13 seconds left to hand the Violets an 82-80 defeat in a men's basketball game played in Chicago, IL, on Sunday, February 20.
With four seconds remaining,
Andy Stein was fouled attempting a layup. After his first attempt rimmed out, he missed the second one purposely.
The strategy worked, as
Carl Yaffe managed to grab the offensive rebound. However, his ensuing shot was blocked and rebounded by the Maroon's Steve Stefanou as time expired.
NYU (14-10, 3-10 UAA) led by as many as 12 in the first half and by 10, 69-59, with 7:15 left in the game. However, consecutive three-pointers by Michael Sustarsic and a layup by Johnson brought Chicago (9-15, 6-7) within two.
A three-pointer by
Kyle Stockmal lifted the Violets to a seven-point lead, 74-67, with 4:12 remaining.
Stefanou followed with a layup and Johnson then connected on a jumper and a three-pointer to create the game's sixth tie, 74-74, with 2:45 left.
Stein's three-pointer with 1:29 remaining put NYU ahead 80-76. But, the final two of Johnson's seven three-pointers handed the Violets another bitter defeat, the seventh in UAA competition by six points or less this season.
Yaffe was one of four Violets to reach double figures in scoring. He led NYU with 24 points (5-6 from three-point range) and eight rebounds. Stein finished with 21 points and six rebounds. Stockmal had 13.
Richie Polan, who scored 14 points, moved into 20th place on the Violets' career scoring list with 1,053. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
Stefanou added 11 points for Chicago, while Tom Williams finished with a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Violets conclude their regular season with a home game against Brandeis University on Saturday, February 26. Tip-off is set for 4:00 pm.
