The New York University women's tennis squad dropped its first spring match of 2011 to host Swarthmore College 6-3.
The tandem of senior
Elizabeth Stachtiaris and sophomore
Ariel Sultan kept NYU in contention early into Saturday's action, netting an 8-4 victory at #1 doubles. Seniors
Liz Feldman and
Lisa Mijovic almost gave the Violets an early lead before falling 9-7 in the #2 doubles slot.
In singles action, Stachtiaris took Lia Carlson of Swarthmore to three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) before dropping her #1 match. Sultan endured similar luck in #3 action, dropping a 6-2, 7-6 (4) match.
Feldman was pushed in her victory at #2 competition, finally winning 6-2, 7-6 (4) to claim one of two singles victories for NYU. Mijovic, a co-captain for the Violets, picked up the other victory in the #4 slot, garnering the 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (3) win.
"We had some chances that slipped away, but overall the level of play was solid," said NYU head coach
Horace Choy.
The Violets return to the court next Saturday when the team hosts Skidmore College at 1:00 pm.
