One year ago, the New York University men's tennis team lost its spring opener at Swarthmore 9-0 en route to a 4-11 season and an eight-place finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship. In the spring of 2011, behind a core group of returnees, the Violets look to kick off the season in winning fashion.
Head coach Horace Choy and the squad return to the court for the first time since a 6-3 setback to Vassar College on October 6, 2010. Yet, in order to pull off the upset over Swarthmore (ranked #10 in the ITA Men's Division III Atlantic South Preseason Poll), the Violets (#18 in the Northeast poll) will look to their co-captain tandem of seniors Matt Gross and Alex Stoler.
Stoler and Gross were college freshmen the last time the Violets topped Swarthmore (2008).
Junior Raphael Namias will be a factor on Saturday and is the most decorated student-athlete for the 2010-11 men's campaign, having already accumulated a 4-1 dual-match record.
Seniors Jason Sacher and Alex Zara also bring a combined five years of NYU tennis competition into the fold.
The match is slated to begin at 2:00 pm. Results will be available on goNYUathletics.com.
