The New York University women's fencing team won two of its seven matches at the Penn State Invitational on Saturday, December 3, in State College, PA.
NYU was pitted against some of the nation's top NCAA Division I fencing programs, including host Penn State University, Temple University, Sacred Heart University, Harvard University, the University of North Carolina, and Princeton University.
The Violets' wins were recorded against North Carolina (17-10) and Vassar College (18-9).
NYU was defeated by Temple (22-5), Penn State (26-1), Princeton (24-3), Harvard (23-4), and Sacred Heart (15-12).
"We battled throughout the day and had some strong performances," said NYU assistant coach
Lauren Willock. "The
results could have been better, though. We lost several close bouts."
The team's top performer on the day was freshman
Audra Fox. The foilist went 11-7 overall, including perfect 3-0 showings in the Violets' two victories.
Fox also had the team's lone win against Penn State.
"It's always good to face stiff competition," Willock added. "This experience should certainly help us down the road."
That experience will be tested next on January 22, when the squad hosts another oustanding group of opponents at the annual NYU Invitational at the Coles Sports Center.
