Women's Tennis Faces Top-Seeded Emory at UAA Championships

Wimes has posted a 12-5 singles record coming into the UAA Championships.

The eight-seeded New York University women's tennis team will be looking for a monumental upset when the Violets face #1 Emory University at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships co-hosted by Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Play is set to begin at 8:30 am on Friday, April 14.

Despite their 3-7 record, the Violets are one of the stronger teams in the northeast. In the April 13 ITA Tennis Northeast Regional Poll, NYU was ranked #12.

Freshman Alexa Wimes leads the Violets in singles victories this season with a 12-5 record. Fellow freshman Flora Lee has also shined, posting a 9-1 singles record.

NYU head coach Horace Choy and his Violet squad have struggled as of late, posting three consecutive losses. However, all of those losses came to currently-ranked Northeast regional teams: The College of New Jersey (6), University of Rochester (13) and William Smith College (21).

Top-seeded Emory comes into the contest as one of the hottest teams in the nation. The Eagles (15-4) are ranked #4 in the ITA Tennis National Poll and #2 in the Atlantic South Regional Poll.

If the Violets win their first-round match against Emory, they would advance to play either #4 Washington University or #5 Rochester in the quarterfinals. Even if NYU loses, it will compete in a consolation match on Saturday versus the loser of the 4-5 match.

Results of the first-round match will be available on goNYUathletics.com.
