Women's Tennis Dropped by William Smith

Violets Fall 6-3 in Final Regular Season Match

Sultan accounted for two victories in Sunday's loss to William Smith.

On Sunday, April 11, the New York University women's tennis team, in its final match of the regular season, fell 6-3 to host William Smith College in Geneva, NY.

With the loss, the Violets dropped to 3-7 on the season as they gear up for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday, April 16.

Freshmen Alexa Wimes and Ariel Sultan led the Violets, accounting for all three of their wins against a William Smith squad that is ranked #27 in the latest ITA Tennis Northeast Regional Poll.

Wimes and Sultan put NYU in contention early, picking up a 7-3 win at #1 doubles. NYU was down only 2-1 after doubles matches.

Wimes later cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory at #1 singles while Sultan won her #2 singles match in three sets, prevailing 3-6, 7-6, 10-8.

Against the University of Rochester yesterday, the Violets were shorthanded and were forced to forfeit two matches. Rochester won that match 9-0. NYU was facing the same circumstances on Sunday, only having five players to compete.

"Considering we had to forfeit two matches and it was still a relatively close loss, I am pleased with the effort," said NYU head coach Horace Choy.
