The NYU women's tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend at the Middlebury College Invitational in Middlebury, VT. 

On Saturday, the Violets defeated Wellesley College, 5-3, and on Sunday, were tripped up by nationally-ranked Brandeis University, 5-3. With those results, NYU is now 2-4. After starting the season 0-3, the Violets have won two out of their last three and are playing as well as they have all year.

“I thought we played very well overall,” said NYU head coach Horace Choy. “We were a little shorthanded, but we had people step up. Brandeis is nationally-ranked and we competed well against them at a high caliber of play.”

Winning singles matches for the Violets against Wellesley were Elizabeth Stachtiaris, Flora Lee, Ariel Sultan, and Tiffany Thong. Alexa Wimes and Lee were also victorious at first singles.

Against Brandeis, Wimes and Lee won at first and third singles, respectively, while Stachtiaris and Sultan were victorious at second doubles.

When asked about his team's recent run of good play, Choy explained that his team is playing with more confidence as the season unfolds.

“It's been a matter of getting matches under their belts,” he said. “With these wins over MIT and Wellesley, and a close loss to Brandeis, we've shown that we have the talent level to compete with a lot of good teams. The girls are confident. Now it's just a matter of staying healthy and playing well.”

The Violets will be back in action on Mar. 26 at Haverford College.
