The New York University women's fencing squad competed against three other teams at Columbia University on Wednesday, Feb. 3, and took two close victories before falling in the final match of the night.
In the first two matches of the night, the Violets picked up wins over Vassar College 15-12 and Sacred Heart 14-13 before host Columbia showed its might with a 21-6 victory. The 2-1 outing for NYU improves the overall team record to 10-15.
Members of NYU's foil team led the Violets for the night. Senior Zoe Evans went 3-0 against both Vassar and Sacred Heart to finish with a perfect 6-0 record while junior Amanda Rysling went 6-2 as she competed against all three teams.
In women's sabre, senior Alyxandra Mattison was 5-4 with a 3-0 performance versus Vassar. Freshman Christiana Lai led the women's epee squad with a 4-5 night and a sweep of Sacred Heart.
With the regular season wrapped up, the Violets now look forward to the postseason. NYU will return to the strip as a team March 14 when the team will compete at the NCAA Regionals at Brown University in Providence, RI.
