The New York University women's fencing team hosted its annual invitational at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan on Saturday, Jan. 23, and took on some of the top fencing programs in the nation.
Five teams ranked in the U.S. College Fencing Coach's poll competed at the invitational: #2 University of Notre Dame, #4 Columbia University, #5 Northwestern University, #6 Ohio State University and #10 Yale University.
The Violets won one of their six matches in the competition, raising their overall record to 4-10 on the season.
“They maintained where they need to maintain to get out qualifiers to the NCAA's,” said NYU head fencing coach Steve Mormando. “While it is nice to beat a school head-to-head, if you get seven or eight people to the NCAA's, then that is out ultimate goal.”
After falling to Ohio State 24-3 in the first round, NYU rebounded to defeat Wayne State University in the second by a score of 18-9.
The Violets dropped their third-round match to St. John's by a score of 19-8. NYU ended the day with losses to Yale (16-11), Notre Dame (23-4), and Northwestern (25-2).
Senior Alyxandra Mattison was the top performer for the NYU women's team, posting a 9-8 mark in sabre, which was one of the toughest weapons of the day.
“Her result was a very, very good result because every sabre team here is strong,” Mormando said.
Junior Joann Reyes also had a surprising outing as she picked up the sabre for the first time today and defeated Dagmara Wozniak, an Olympian who competes at St. John's.
The NYU women's fencing team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 30, as it travels to Cambridge, MA, for the MIT Invitational.
