Box Score
Brandon Hintz made the most of his first appearance this season, scoring his first goal since his sophomore season in Saturday night's 1-0 victory over Baruch College in non-conference men's soccer action at Manhattan College's Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
After a few early, dangerous advances into Baruch's end, the Violets (3-4) finally capitalized 14:37 into the contest. Anthony Tumbiolo made a run up the left flank, then volleyed a cross into the right side of the box. Hintz shook free of the Bearcats' (1-3-1) defense and lined a one-timer off his left foot into the lower left corner of the net for the game's lone goal.
Although the Violets generally possessed the better of play, they struggled to get off shots in the Baruch final third and, despite owning a 8-1 edge on corner kicks, only outshot their intracity rivals by a 11-6 margin.
"This was not an easy game," NYU head coach Joe Behan said. "We improved upon what we needed to improve upon, which was playing possession football."
Baruch's most dangerous threat came in the 80th minute when Marcelo Martinez threaded a through ball into the box toward Vincent Cruz, but NYU goalkeeper Marek Urbanski (one save) snuffed the threat before Cruz could take a shot.
Nelson DiBastiano started in goal and made two saves while allowing one goal, before Michael Murphy entered and made one stop in the final 35:42.
NYU returns to action with another home game Wednesday, Sept. 23, against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Lubetkin Field. Kickoff time is 7 p.m. in Newark, NJ.
