Avenging a tough loss on Saturday, the New York University men's tennis team defeated Union College by a score of 9-0 Sunday in Latham, NY.
The doubles teams started off the first win of the season by taking the first three matches. Patrick Whitner and Alex Stoler defeated Vic Ravikumar and Dan Nault 8-6 before the #2 team of Craig Berger and Calvin Chou put away their opponents 8-5. Sophomore Matthew Gross and junior Eugene Tsarevskiy followed with an 8-5 defeat of Saul Kurtz and Mike Kanner.
With a slightly different lineup than in the previous match, the Violets did not let up in the singles competition. Seniors Berger (#1) and Chou (#2) repeated Saturday's performances by also winning their singles matches after a doubles win. In the #3 singles match, sophomore Jason Sacher fell behind early, dropping the first set 1-6. He then rallied to defeat Nault in the next two sets by scores of 6-2 and 10-5. After not competing in Saturday's match, Pavel Zhuravlev returned to action against the Dutchmen and defeated Kanner 6-1, 6-2 in the #6 match to secure the sweep and bring NYU's record to 1-3.
“It was good to get the first win under our belt,” said head coach Horace Choy. “We will build on this win.”
The Violets will try to capture their second win of 2009 when they face North Carolina Wesleyan College next Friday, March 6, in Salisbury, MD.
