The New York University women's tennis team dropped its first match of 2009, falling to Swarthmore College 5-4 on Saturday in Swarthmore, PA.

Following a 1-2 match record during its fall '08 slate, the Violets opened the spring portion of its schedule with a close loss to Swarthmore.

NYU and Swarthmore split the six singles matches, while the Garnets won the match on the strength of capturing two of the three doubles contests.

Winners in singles for the Violets were Elizabeth Feldman at #4, #Lisa Mijovic at 5 and #Lena-Sophie Krups at 6.  

NYU's lone victory in doubles came from their #2 pair of Krups and captain Stephanie Tu.  The duo defeated their opponents by a score of 8-5.

"I'm happy with the way we competed.  We fought hard until the end," said NYU head coach Horace Choy.  "We beat them 5-4 last year, so I guess it was their turn this season."

The squad returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.
