The New York University women's fencing squad competed in the Harvard University Invitational and recorded two wins in the day-long event in Cambridge, MA,  on Sunday, Nov. 29.

The Violets faced off against six opponents, winning matches against Vassar College and Sacred Heart University to move to 3-5 on the season.

Junior foilist Amanda Rysling had a standout day for the Violets' fencers. She was 11-6 overall with a 3-0 mark against Sacred Heart and 2-1 showings against the University of North Carolina, Vassar and Princeton University.

"Amanda fenced very well this weekend," said NYU assistant coach Lauren Willock. "As an upperclassman she has become a great leader for both her foil squad and the entire team with her hard work and dedication. Not only did she perform well on the strip, but she was a constant source of encouragement and guidance to her teammates when she was on the sidelines."

NYU dropped its first two matches of the day to defending national champion Penn State University by a tally of 25-2 and host Harvard University by a score of 24-3.

In the third round, NYU rebounded nicely with an 18-9 win over Vassar on the strength of its sabre and epee teams both going 7-2. Senior Alyxandra Mattison and sophomore Lisa Verzino both put up 3-0 sabre mark against Vassar to help NYU get its first victory of the day.

The Violets had a tough 15-12 setback to North Carolina before rebounding for a 17-10 victory over Sacred Heart. Senior epeeist Eliza Friar posted a 3-0 tally in the match

To close out the day, NYU fell to Princeton University by a 24-3 margin.
