A late push proved fruitless as New York University dropped a 1-0 decision to the University of Rochester in the University Athletic Association (UAA) men's soccer opener for both teams Saturday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium in Rochester, NY.
NYU (4-6-0, 0-1-0 UAA) fired off three shots in the final 10 minutes, and took two corner kicks in the last two minutes of regulation, but could not overcome an early tally by the Yellowjackets (7-0-2, 1-0-0 UAA).
Ranked #11 in the D3Soccer.com Top 25 and #14 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Division III National Rankings, Rochester got the game-winning goal at 24:18 when J.J. Dennstedt headed home a long ball from Phil Proud for his fifth goal of the season.
Brandon Hintz led the Violets with two shots, both of them going on frame.
Matt Stieve dropped to 1-2-0 despite making four saves for the Violets, who also got a team save. Michael Peacock put aside four shots for the Yellowjackets, who owned advantages on shots (15-5) and corner kicks (7-5).
NYU is off until next Saturday, Oct. 10, when it hosts Case Western Reserve University at 11:00 a.m. at the College of Staten Island.
