Sergie Marchuk's blast from 35 yards out 1:59 into overtime helped Kean University post a 1-0 victory over New York University on Wednesday night at the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ.

In a game that saw both squads struggle to find their offensive footing, Marchuk took a feed from Dennis Correia during a run upfield, took advantage of a quick opening in the NYU defense and helped Kean (1-1-1) pick up its first victory of the season while ruining the Violets' (0-1) season debut.

NYU owned a 10-5 edge on shots and a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks, but neither team capitalized upon the few offensive opportunities presented.

Kean's best chance during regulation came during the 74th minute, when Correia had the ball at his feet and an open net, but put a shot high and wide.

Senior forward Adam Dhanens possessed both of the Violets' top threats, putting a shot high and wide in the 36th minute and then having a header off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Anthony Tumbiolo thwarted by Kean goalkeeper Alfredo Oquendo (2 saves).

Junior goalkeeper Marek Urbanski endured the defeat for NYU, making three saves.

NYU resumes action Saturday, Sept. 6, when it hosts Muhlenberg College at Manhattan College's Gaelic Park.  Game time is 2 p.m.
