Scott Waddell has completed four seasons as an assistant coach of the New York University women’s soccer team. He is primarily responsible for in-game coaching, scouting and working with the Violets’ attackers.
In 2019, the squad posted its sixth-straight winning season. The Violets produced an 11-7 overall record, which included a 1-0 overtime victory against then-#10 University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Case Western Reserve University on October 5.
The 2018 season was highlighted by the program’s third trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament and first with Waddell on staff. The Violets finished 10-6-3 overall and in second place (5-1-1) in the ultra-competitive UAA, marking NYU’s highest finish since 2002. Three NYU players were named All-East Region by the United Soccer Coaches (USC), including Maddie Peña, who was named First Team after leading the squad in points (24) and setting a new program record with 10 assists. She was also honored as a Second Team All-American by d3soccer.com.
During the 2017 season, Waddell helped lead NYU to its fourth consecutive winning season. The Violets compiled an overall record of 13-5-4 and a fourth-place 2-3-2 mark in the UAA. The squad earned a postseason appearance in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Tournament and made it to the finals, but fell on penalty kicks to Springfield College for the second consecutive season.
Many players were recognized for their outstanding play in 2017. Marquel Love, Alex Benedict and Sophia Danielsen were named USC Second Team All-East. Danielsen and Love were selected First Team All-UAA, while Benedict and Pena earned Second Team honors.
In 2016, Waddell helped guide NYU to a 13-3-6 record, the third-highest single-season win total in program history. The Violets earned a postseason bid to the ECAC Division III Championship where they advanced to the finals from a 16-team field before falling to Springfield on penalty kicks in the championship match.
Under Waddell’s direction, Violet attackers had a successful campaign. Benedict and Teressa Fazio each contributed seven goals and six assists, while Love and Lexi Clarke, who was named Second Team All-UAA and First Team All-ECAC Metro, added five goals and three assists apiece.
Waddell came to NYU after two seasons as an assistant coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ. Prior to his time there, Waddell coached four seasons as an assistant at his alma mater, Columbia University. He has also accumulated experience with the ENYSSA Olympic Development Program as Head Coach of its U17 team (2012-14) and as Director of the NYC Soccer Academy (2010-14).
A 2007 Columbia graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science, Waddell played four seasons as a midfielder/forward with the Lions' soccer team and also served as a captain.
Following his collegiate career, Waddell played professionally for Pulau Penang FC (2008) and Real Mona FC (2009).
A member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Waddell holds United States Soccer Federation (USSF) 'B' License and a NSCAA National License. He is a native of Kingston, Jamaica, and resides in Manhattan.
