The New York University's baseball team (7-9, 2-4) played a doubleheader against the
#14-ranked Washington University in St. Louis Bears (19-6, 3-3) on Friday, April 3, at Kelly Field in St. Louis, Missouri.
The first game of the four-game series against WashU showed NYU's offensive fire power to give the Violets their first win against a ranked opponent of the season. In game two, WashU got out to an early lead and went on to split the doubleheader.
Game 1: 11-5 New York University
NYU's offense has been one of the best units in the UAA all season and that continued in game one, as the Violets homered three times.
There were no runs through the first two innings, but
Kosta Mocklis broke the tie with a massive grand slam in the top half of the third.
Holding the 4-0 lead,
Max Oliveira launched a ball over the right field fence in the fifth to extend the Violets' lead to five. Oliveira's fifth inning homer made it three consecutive games of him hitting a home run.
NYU's dominance continued as they scored another four runs in the seventh, putting the Bears in their largest deficit of the season.
Aidan Pawlak started on the mound for the Violets and pitched an efficient four innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters.
Clayton Green came in relief and picked up right where Pawlak left off. He gave up one run in three innings pitched and struck out a pair of hitters.
CJ Franchini responded to WashU's one run in the eighth with a two-run homer of his own.
WashU scored a combined four runs in the final two innings, but the Violets held on for the game one victory.
Game 2: 12-1 Washington University in St. Louis
The Bears got their first lead of the day in the bottom of the third by scoring four runs, highlighted by a two-run home run by Shane Pellegrino.
With NYU scoreless through the first four innings,
Aidan Howladar led the top of the fifth off with a ground-rule double to give the Violets life. Two batters later, Mocklis once again walked up to the plate with bases loaded and recorded his fifth RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to cut into the Bears' lead.
WashU scored another two runs in the bottom half of the frame and later extended its lead by adding six more in the following inning to make the score 12-1.
The game ended after the top half of the seventh.

- NYU's bullpen held WashU to just six hits in game one
- Pawlak didn't allow any runs in his appearance on the mound for the first time this season
- Franchini hit his first home run of the season in game one
- Mocklis and Oliveira entered the series as the UAA's slugging percentage leaders & both homered in game one
