Another historic milestone reached.
The New York University women's basketball team won its 90th-straight game, defeating Hardin-Simmons University 103-61, in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday, March 13, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
The Violets have now tied UConn (2008-10) for the second-longest win streak in NCAA basketball history....surpassed only by UConn's 111 straight from 2014-17.
"We were playing for a chance to go to the Elite 8 tonight," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "Streaks are nice, but our goal is to compete for another National Championship."
NYU trailed early in Friday's contest, 9-4, but scored the next 11 points.
The Violets never trailed again.
Olivia Lagao's buzzer-beating three-pointer gave NYU a 28-15 lead after the first quarter.
Late in the second quarter, Lagao connected on consecutive three-pointers and followed with two free throws for a 32-point lead, 59-27.
The Violets (28-0) went on to lead at halftime 59-30, with Lagao accounting for 11 points and
Caroline Peper leading the way with 17.
Yasmene Clark's and-one ended the third quarter, giving NYU an 85-49 lead.
"This was a complete team win," Barber added. "Half our points (52) came from our bench."
NYU shot 59.1 percent (39-66) from the field and 51.5 percent (17-33) from long distance.
Peper finished with a game-high 24 points and Lagao scored 17.
Clark recorded a near-double-double of 15 points and nine rebounds, while
Caitlin Kenney's 10 rebounds were a career-high.
Zahra Alexander was a also a double-digit scorer (16) for the Violets.
Jacqueline Berry led Hardin-Simmons (24-6) with 20 points.
NYU will host the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in an Elite 8 match-up on Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm back at the Paulson Center.
