Men's Basketball Posts Overtime Win

Violets Prevail at Carnegie Mellon

The #25-ranked New York University men's basketball team completed a sweep of its University Athletic Association (UAA) road weekend with a 70-68 overtime victory against Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday, February 8, in Pittsburgh, PA.

In a tightly-contested game throughout, the Violets came back in the final seconds to register the win.

Carnegie Johnson' s free throw with 3.3 seconds left in the second half sent the game into overtime. 

The teams stayed within two points of each other throughout the extra session. 

Darren Rubin's layup with 14 seconds gave NYU a 69-68 lead. He then stole the ball on Carnegie Mellon's next possession and converted a free throw with 5.5 left. 

The Tartans pushed the ball down court but failed to convert and the Violets walked off with the victory.  

"Sometimes you have to have to win ugly," said Head Coach Waleed Farid. "We made the plays that we needed to and the guys stepped up at the end." 

NYU took its biggest lead of the game, 19-11, with 7:14 remaining in the first half.

Carnegie Mellon ended the half on a 17-6 run and led 28-25 at the break. 

The teams stayed within three points of each other until Henry Bickford's jumper midway through the second half gave the Violets a 48-43 lead.

After the Tartans tied the score with a 5-0 run, Darius Gakwasi connected on a three-pointer to put NYU back in front. 

Carnegie Mellon responded wth the next seven points to retake the lead.with three minutes left.

Another Gakwasi three-pointer, followed by a bucket from Rubin, gave the Violets a 58-57 lead with 52 seconds remaining. 

The Tartans' Nikola Dimitrijevic was fouled on a lay-in and converted the and-one with 12 seconds remaining before Johnson's free throw extended the game another five minutes..

Rubin led the Violets with 18 points and a game-high seven assists.

Johnson (12), Bryan Moussako (11) and Gakwasi (10) all scored in double figures.

Quinn Clark led NYU with eight rebounds.

The Violets return to action on Friday, February 13, when they travel to Rochester, NY, for a match-up against the University of Rochester. That UAA contest is set to tip-off at 5:30pm.
