85th straight win.
Fifth straight University Athletic Asociation (UAA) Championship.
The New York University women's basketball team continues its unprecedented march to March.
The top-ranked Violets defeated #16 Washington University in St. Louis 82-62 on Friday night at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan, capturing their fifth-straight UAA title and extending its NCAA Division III record-winning streak to 85 games.
NYU trailed after the first quarter, 16-15, and led by only six, 54-48, after three quarters.
The Bears were within 57-50 early in the fourth quarter, but a 10-1 run removed all doubt that NYU would be celebrating as the advantage grew to 20 before the final buzzer.
"This is a real team championship," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "We lost so many players from last year and so many players have stepped up this year. So many don't get the accolades, but everyone on this team has contributed to make us champions again."
Zahra Alexander came off the bench to score a team-high 23 points.
Brooke Batchelor scored 20 and
Caroline Peper, the team's only senior and four-time UAA Champion, added 18.
"It's amazing. I can't even put it into words," Peper said. "It's not something you think of when you first come to NYU. It's just a testament to how competitive we are and how much hard work we put in."
Yasmene Clark dominated the glass with 14 rebounds, while Peper contributed a team-high six assists.
The Violets shot over 50 percent (51.7) from the field and 48.1 percent from long distance.
"We're going to enjoy this one tonight, but of course the NCAA Tournament is looming," Barber added. "The UAA gets you prepared, with so many great teams and coaches."
Two more regular-season games remain, with the Violets returning to the court on Sunday and hosting the University of Chicago. Tip-off is set for 12:00pm.
