The
top-ranked New York University women's basketball team ran its nation-long winning streak to 75 games with a 75-54 victory over the University of Rochester on Friday, January 16, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
Zahra Alexander led the way with a career-high 22 points as the Violets' won their University Athletic Association (UAA) home opener.
In their toughest test of the year thus far, the Violets (13-0, 2-0) were challenged by the Yellowjackets (7-6, 0-2) throughout the first half, but were able to create distance in the second.
The Violets fell behind for only the second time all season early in the game. Trailing 6-4, NYU scored the next nine points.
The Yellowjackets rallied with the next seven points to knot the game at 13-13.
However, NYU ended the first quarter by scoring the next four points and never trailed again.
The Violets opened with the first five points of the second quarter and went on to lead 41-29 at halftime.
NYU's lead grew to as many as 24 points before they settled for a 57-38 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Caitlin Kenney's layup with 1:23 remaining gave NYU its biggest lead of the contest, 73-48.
Aila Kaibara added 16 points for the Violets.
Yasmene Clark grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to go with eight points, four steals and an assist.
Caroline Peper and
Olivia Lagao each dished out a team-high four assists.
The Violets return to action on Sunday when they host #8 Emory University at the Paulson Center. Tip-off for the UAA contest is set for 12:00pm.
