The
#23-ranked New York University women's volleyball team faced #10 Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, on Saturday, August 30.
In this match-up of top-25 teams, the Violets fell short 25-22, 25-12, 25-18.
NYU had a 10-8 lead in the first set, but a 6-0 run by the hosts gave Trinity the lead for good.
The Violets never led in the second set and their only advantage in the third set was an early 2-1 lead.
NYU is now 1-2 this season.
"The team battled hard and showed spurts of elite-eight level volleyball," said Head Coach Andrew Brown. "Trinity was a great example of where the standard of conference play and late matches in the season will look like, and having the motivation to walk away from this opening weekend with that knowledge is going to benefit us as we prepare for our home opener."
Coco Barton, who had a team-high eight kills for the Violets, was named to the Trinity Classic All-Tournament Team..
Ava Launsbach led with 17 assists, while Chloe Lemons had a team-high 14 digs.
"Our middles did an unbelievable job at establishing our offense, and also our first line of defense," Brown added. "As we continue to incorporate them into our offensive strategy, it'll create better opportunities for our pin hitters on the outside and right side."
The Violets return to action when they host the NYU Home-Opener Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 5-6. The Violets' first match will be against Gallaudet University on Friday at 7pm at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
