The New York University baseball team ended its University Athletic Association (UAA) portion of the schedule with a doubleheader against the University of Chicago on Sunday, April 27, in Chicago, IL.
The Violets took game one 8-3 before falling 3-1 in game two. Both contests were played to seven innings, as agreed upon by the two teams.
NYU got off to a quick start in the front end of the twin bill, with
Harrison Blueweiss and
Nick Argenziano registering back-to-back doubles in the first two at-bats of the game to put the Violets ahead 1-0. Two batters later,
Nate Pallotta knocked in Argenziano on a single to center field. The inning was capped off with a two-run single by
Jack Kelman.
The Maroons cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second before both teams brought one run across in the third inning.
After neither side was able to score in the following three frames, the Violets scored three runs on two hits in the top of the seventh to go up 8-3.
NYU's bullpen combined for five innings without an earned run allowed and struck out four batters. Kelman totaled four RBI in the game.
In a pitcher's dual in game two, UChicago got on the board in the bottom of the first after stringing three consecutive singles together.
The Maroons added on in the bottom of fifth with two more runs to extend their advantage to 3-0.
NYU managed to bring a run across in the top of the seventh on a Michael Burton Jr. RBI single, which also brought the tying run to the plate. However, the Violets could not complete the comeback.
The Violets will return home for Senior Day on Thursday, May 1, when they welcome the University of Mount Saint Vincent for a doubleheader at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park in Staten Island, NY. First pitch is scheduled for 3pm.
