The New York University men's and women's fencing teams dominated at Long Island University's Shark Showdown on Sunday, February 23, in Brooklyn, NY.
The men's team fenced in three rounds and the women fenced four. Both teams finished the day undefeated, securing convincing wins in all of their matches.
The men began the day with a 16-11 victory over Wagner College, followed by victories over Lafayette College (19-8) and hosts LIU (21-6).
The men's overall top performer were
Oliver Hu (9-0) in foil, and
Ansh Ghayalod (9-0) in saber.
Anders Yu (7-2) and
Farr Dickson (8-1) added to the win total in foil, and
Michael Kang was the best fencer in epee.
The women's team defeated Wagner by a score of 18-9, shutout Yeshiva University 27-0, and finished the day with wins against Lafayette and LIU by scores of 23-4 and 16-11, respectively.
For the women's squad,
Lily Papadakis led the way with a 9-3 record in epee.
Sharon Ni and
Greta Yuan both posted 6-0 records in saber, and
Aurora Aschettino (8-1),
Renee Wu (8-2),
Annika Santos (8-1), and
Claudia Meyer (7-1) dominated in foil.
"It was important for the team to close out the regular season on a high note as we prepare for our postseason events," said Head Coach
Ben Bratton. "I'm looking forward to seeing this mindset carry through at NCAA Regionals."
The fencers will get a two-week break as they prepare to travel to Medford, MA for the NCAA Regional Championship hosted by Tufts University. The event is set to begin at 7 am on Sunday, March 9.
