The New York University men's and women's fencing teams participated in the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet hosted by Columbia University on Wednesday, February 12, in Manhattan.
The men's and women's teams fenced three schools, and they both finished the day with an overall record of 2-1.
The men's team looked dominant in their victories over Vassar College (20-7) and Sacred Heart University (18-9). Their only loss came in a close match against the host Lions, who edged the Violets by a score of 15-12.
The men's top performers were
Farr Dickson (7-2) and
Adam Wong (6-0) for foil,
Peter Nikolov (4-2) in epee, and
Ansh Ghayalod and
Vincent Hong, who both put up a 7-2 record in saber.
"While our men's team narrowly fell short against a strong opponent in Columbia," said Head Coach
Ben Bratton, "we're confident in our position as we move forward into the rest of the season.
The women's side had a similar result, with an overwhelming win over Vassar (24-3) and a similarly dominant performance over Sacred Heart (21-6). The women's single loss came against Columbia by a score of 22-5.
The top performers on the women's side were
Aurora Aschettino (6-0) and
Emily Luo (5-1) in foil,
Azniv Basralian (6-3) and
Sophia Dondisch (5-4) in epee, and
Sharon Ni (6-3) in saber.
"It's always exciting to be a part of the tradition and history of our matches with Columbia," said Bratton. "We also saw some outstanding individual performances, with key victories that secured spots in the NCAA regional qualifiers."
The entire squads will be back in action on Sunday, February 23, when they fence at Shark Showdown hosted by Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY.
