Nelson Notches 1,000th Kill as Women's Volleyball Sweeps Hunter

Violets Cap Off Tear It Up! Fall Fest With 3-0 Victory

The New York University women's volleyball team capped off the Tear It Up! Fall Fest celebration, hosting and defeating Hunter College at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan, on Friday, October 17th.

The Violets utilized the energy from the Fall Fest home crowd to dominate the match, sweeping the Hawks 25-12, 25-14, 25-21.

The Violets and Hawks traded points to begin the opening frame, but a four-point NYU run gave the Violets their first multi-point lead of the match and the permanent lead in the set. A six-point run that included two service aces from Grace Nelson extended the Violets' lead to 18-9. That lead grew to as many as 14 points at 24-10 as NYU coasted to a first-set victory.

NYU led from wire-to-wire in the second set, as an early four-point run gave the Violets a 6-1 lead. The Violets followed that up with another four-point run off the back of three consecutive service aces from Sarah Beville to extend the lead to 13-4. The Violets' lead only continued to grow, increasing to 10 points off a kill from Jessica Spierenburg at 18-8. Sienna Morales finished off the set with a kill for NYU.

The Violets seized the momentum in the third set, jumping out to a  6-0 lead and never looking back. The Hawks narrowed the gap to 13-10, but the Violets would not allow them to come any closer. Hunter began to mount a comeback, staving off five straight NYU match points, coming within three points again at 24-21. However, the Violets' lead proved to be too much, as a kill from Stella Dillon secured the victory.

A total of 12 Violets recorded kills on the match, but Casey Cho led the way with seven. Ava Launsbach tallied a team-high 13 assists while Jessica Ding notched 12 to go with five digs.

"It was a lot of fun to get to play with this crowd and this amount of support," says Head Coach Andrew Brown. "We did a great job at taking care of business and focusing on how to earn points."

During the second set of the match, Nelson recorded her 1,000th career kill, joining an elite club of Violet volleyball players to reach the mark. She was presented with a commemorative ball to honor the incredible milestone.

"Grace is a great leader on the court as one of our captains. To see the amount of love and energy for her to get 1,000 kills as a junior shows how hard she's working," said Brown. "She's really eager to continue to get better every day. Those are the type of players you want in your program."

The Violets take the court again tomorrow, hosting Kean University and Williams College at the Paulson Center at 10:30 a.m and 4:00 p.m, respectively.
