Men's Volleyball Ends Regular Season with Victory

Violets Defeat Nazareth to Clinch First-Round Bye at UVC Championship

The #12-ranked New York University men's volleyball team swept the #17-ranked Nazareth University on Saturday, April 6, at the John A. Paulson Center in their regular season finale.

The Violets (16-7, 5-2) defeated the Golden Flyers (19-9, 3-4) 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.

"Today we played well enough to win," said Head Coach José Piña. "We were inconsistent hitting .219 today, but we outmatched them at the net and it was a good win to prepare for next weekend."

NYU's win clinches second place in the United Volleyball Conference (UVC), meaning a bye for the first round of the playoffs.

Neither team pulled away early in the first set. With the score tied 15-15, NYU broke through with a four-point run featuring a kill from Lucas Osiecki and two from Emerson Evans.

The Violets pulled ahead by seven points and Osiecki tipped the ball over the net to win the first set.

NYU led 8-5 in the second set, but a Golden Flyers' three-point run tied the score. The Violets broke a 9-9 tie through two kills and an ace from Osiecki. Another four-point streak featuring kills from Luke Boyer and Osiecki put NYU six points clear. Boyer's kill ended the set.

The Violets raced to a 12-5 lead in the final set, but the Golden Flyers scored four in a row to cut the deficit to three. NYU built the lead back up to six en route to securing the victory.

Boyer led NYU with seven kills while Osiecki and Evans recorded six each. Devyn Nguyen assisted a match-high 26 times and Zach Knudsen led the match with 10 digs.

The Violets begin their UVC playoff run next Saturday, April 13, against either Nazareth or St. John Fisher.
