Baseball Plays Doubleheader at Wash U

Violets Swept by Bears

The New York University baseball team continued its University Athletic Association (UAA) weekend series with a doubleheader against Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, March 30, in St. Louis, MO.

The Violets (13-6, 0-3) were swept by the Bears (17-8, 3-0) by scores of 14-8 and 8-7.

NYU held a pair of four-run leads early in the first game. They were ahead 4-0 after the top of the third on the strength of a pair of RBI's from both Dakota Barbet and Nick Argenziano.

After the Bears plated two in the bottom of the third, the Violets answered back in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run from Nate Pallotta to regain the four-run lead.

After Wash U scored two in the bottom of the frame, NYU again went up by four on Argenziano's two-run single.

But, that was all the scoring the Violets could muster as the Bears plated three in the bottom of the fifth and exploded for seven in the bottom of the sixth to take a 14-8 lead that remained for the rest of the contest.

Max Oliveira contributed three of NYU's 11 hits in the contest.

Starter Sean Bolin started and went 4.1 innings as five Violets toed the slab. Jason Pearson suffered the loss, going only 0.2 innings, while Joe Cetale went the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run.

In the nitecap, NYU fell behind 8-2 but rallied with a run in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth to cut their deficit to one.

However, despite getting the lead off man on in the top of the ninth, the Violets were unable to score the equalizer.

Pallotta had three of NYU's nine hits in the second game. Pallotta hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season and Oliveira knocked in a pair of runs.

Paul Guerne started for the Violets and went 4.1 innings in suffering the loss. Aidan Dolinsky and CJ DuBois each threw a shutout inning in relief.

The Violets and Bears conclude their four-game series with another game on Sunday beginning at 11:00am central.
