Softball Opens 2024 Season

Violets Split with Stevens

The New York University softball team opened its 2024 season with a pair of games vs. Stevens in Weehawken, NJ, on Friday, March 3.

The Violets dropped the opener 6-0, but rebounded for a 6-5 win in the nitecap.

NYU could not get its offense going in the first game, as the Ducks' Kyra Fischer shutout the Violets on five hits.

Stevens scored all the runs they needed in the second inning, plating three off NYU starter Jessie Werthman. She went four innings, striking out three and allowing five runs, but only one was earned.

Five different NYU players recorded one hit, including Lizzy Smith and Alyssa Quary, with each also drawing a walk.

In the second game, the Violets trailed 4-1 but scored four in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.

Lindsey Baron started the rally with a triple and she was knocked in by Marina Egbert. Mia Lemmon drove in the next run with a fielder's choice, Nicole Cicchetti's single tied the score and a Stevens error gave NYU the lead.

The Ducks tied the score in the top of the seventh on a two-out single, but the resilient Violets put one across in the bottom of the frame to claim the victory.

Baron again started the rally with a single. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt and eventually came around to score on Cicchetti's fielder's choice.

Egbert started for the Violets and went the first six innings, with Karleigh Kluever picking up the win in relief.

The Violets were scheduled to play on Saturday, March 2, for a doubleheader at The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ, but the games have been postponed due to expected heavy rain.
