Women's Basketball Remains Unbeaten

Violets Go to 22-0 with Win on Super Sunday

The top-ranked New York University women's basketball team added to its school-record winning streak with a convincing 76-54 victory over Carnegie Mellon University on Super Bowl Sunday, February 11, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.

The Violets' have won 22 consecutive games (22-0, 11-0) to open the season.

NYU actually trailed the Tartans (10-12, 2-9) 5-0 to begin the game, but scored the next 21 points to complete the first quarter.

"We just had to warm up a little bit at the beginning. And then, just like always, we relied on our defense to get stops," said Head Coach Meg Barber.

Carnegie Mellon broke the streak with a pair of free throws to start the second quarter, but the NYU onslaught continued as the lead grew to as many as 24 points before the Violets took a 42-21 halftime lead.

The Tartans pulled within 16 points midway through the third, but the Violets re-established a 57-36 lead at the end of the quarter.

NYU's advantage increased to a game-high 27 points, 67-40, on Belle Pellecchia's layup with 6:02 left in the contest.

Natalie Bruns and Morgan Morrison each scored 15 points to lead the Violets. Morrison connected on seven of her eight shots from the field, while Bruns grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Megan Bauman dished out a team-high four assists.

The NYU seniors, Bruns, Honor Culpepper (5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist) and Jordan Janowski, were honored along with their families in a pre-game ceremony.

"Today was a great day for our seniors," Barber added. "To finish the season unbeaten at home and just a great way to celebrate our three outstanding seniors."

The Violets continue University Athletic Association (UAA) action when they face Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, February 16, in St. Louis, MO. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm central time.
