Men's Basketball Falls Short

Violets Drop Tight Decision to Carnegie Mellon

The #11-ranked New York University men's basketball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped by Carnegie Mellon University, 83-80, on Super Bowl Sunday, February 11, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.

In a game of runs, the Violets (18-4, 8-3), saw their final rally fall short in the closing seconds.

After taking an early lead, NYU fell behind by eight points, 34-26, with just over five minutes left in the first half.

The Violets then embarked on a 17-4 run and went ahead 43-38 following Michael Savarino's three-pointer with 1:04 left in the half.

NYU led 43-41 at halftime, but the Tartans (14-8, 6-5) opened the second half on a 21-8 streak to take a game-high 11-point lead, 62-51.

Again the Violets responded, this time by scoring the next 10 points to close the gap to a single point.

After a Tartan free throw , Zay Freeney hit a pair for NYU and the game was knotted at 63-63.

Freeney's drive with 4:16 left in the game gave the Violets their final lead, 71-69.

Carnegie Mellon scored the next nine points, but NYU pushed back and pulled within one 81-80, on Spencer Freedman's and-one with just five ticks remaining.

Jack Stone then converted two free throws for the Tartans, and when Freedman's potential game-tying three-pointer bounced off the rim, the Violets' win streak was snapped.

Freedman led the Violets with 20 points and six assists. Freeney finished with 19 points, Hampton Sanders had 13 and Savarino added 12.

Emmanuel Onuama had a game-high 12 rebounds.

Despite the loss, NYU remains in undisputed possession of first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with three game remaining.

Prior to the Violets' final home game of the regular season, NYU honored its graduating players: Freedman, Savarino, Jacob Sussman, Hayden Peek, Cinque Stephens, and Konrad Kiszka.

The Violets go on the road for a UAA contest against Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, February 16. Tip-off in St. Louis, MO, is set for 7:30pm central time.
