NYU Competes at the Tradition Tournament

The New York University men's and women's fencing teams delivered standout performances at the Tradition Tournament, which was hosted by Vassar College on Sunday, December 8, in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The men's team defeated three of its four opponents, while the women posted three victories.

The Violets' men's squad defeated host Vassar (23-4), New Jersey Institute of Technology (21-6), Sacred Heart University (21-6), and were edged by Princeton University (15-12).

The NYU women defeated Vassar (22-5), New Jersey Institute of Technology (20-7) and Sacred Heart (18-8), but were edged by Temple University (14-13) and Princeton (16-11).

"We faced a competitive day at Vassar, and our teams delivered standout performances against strong opponents," said Head Coach Ben Bratton.

For the men, Adam Wong finished with an impressive 9-1 foil record, while Anup Banerjee went 8-3. Epee fencers Ajit Sivakumar (9-3) and Steven Grams (5-2) also performed well, and the Violets were complemented by strong saber outings from Jerry Pan (9-3) and Matthew Zhou (7-2).

"The men's team showcased its consistency, finishing with dominant results in foil and epee," Bratton added.

For the women, Maria Stamos led the foil squad with an 11-3 record, supported by Aurora Aschettino (6-3). In saber, Kayla Alcebar finished the weekend at 12-3, with key contributions in the weapon coming from Greta Yuan (8-5) and Hannah Hoverman (4-1). Lefu Chen's 8-5 epee record anchored her squad along with Karina Dyner at 7-4.

"On the women's side, we saw some exceptional performances," Bratton said. "Special credit goes to our foil and saber squads, who delivered key wins to keep us competitive throughout the event.

"While we faced challenges against Temple and Princeton, the weekend provided valuable lessons and opportunities for growth," Bratton continued. "I'm proud of how our athletes battled, and we're determined to use this momentum as we prepare for the next stage of the season."

The NYU fencers will be back in action on Saturday, January 18, when they compete at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, PA.
