Women's Volleyball Falls in NCAA Second Round

Violets Drop Four Setter to Engineers

The New York University women's volleyball team saw its 2024 season come to an end in a four-set loss to the Massachussets Insitute of Technology in the second round of the NCAA tournament, on Friday, November 22, in Cambridge, MA.

"It was a really proud moment for me as a coach to see our young talent out there showcasing their skill," said Head Coach Andrew Brown. "I think this will only fire them up for more opportunities in the future."

In a back-and-forth start to the first set, the Violets led 12-11 through 23 rallies. However, the Engineers then scored five consecutive points to force NYU to call a timeout. MIT continued its run out of the break, winning three of the next four rallies to grows its lead to five. With the Engineers later up 19-15, MIT finished the set with a 6-2 run.

NYU answered back in the second stanza, getting out to a 12-9 edge to begin. The Engineers then jumped on top top following a 10-3 run, but the Violets evened the score by winning five of the next six rallies. After a MIT timeout, NYU continued to rally, extending its run to 10-2 to claim the set. In that run, Grace Nelson collected four kills.

Down 11-7 in the third frame, the Violets recovered with a 9-3 run to take a two-point edge. The Engineers responded immediately, though, winning four consecutive rallies to re-take the lead, 18-16. After NYU evened the score, 18-18, MIT won the set with a 7-1 run.

The Engineers once again started off strong in the fourth stanza, leading 6-2 to begin, but the Violets strung three consecutive points together to cut the deficit to one. With MIT later up 16-11, a 7-2 NYU run tied the score, 18-18. After the two teams traded the next two rallies, the Engineers went on to clinch the match by winning six of the next seven points.

Nelson tallied 17 kills, while Yooni Park collected 28 digs, both of which were match-highs. Ava Launsbach posted a personal-best 35 assists.

"I couldn't be prouder of this group and everything that's going to be coming in the future," added Brown. "They've shown that it's possible to be both a student and an awesome athlete, and I think that's just something really special."

The Violets finish the season with a 22-13 record and having made its fourth straight tournament. Additionally, they reached the second round of the tournament for the fourth straight season.
