Fencing Teams Host on Sunday

Violets Welcome LIU, St. John's and Wagner to the Paulson Center

The New York University men's and women's fencing teams hosted St. John's University, Long Island University (LIU) and Wagner College for the NYU Invitational at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan, NY, on Sunday, November 17.

The Violets opened the day against LIU, then faced St. John's and concluded action against Wagner.

"It was very exciting to host a meet of this size with the schools that we invited," said Head Coach Ben Bratton.

Both NYU squads opened the competition with victories over Wagner. The women won 19-8, with the men victorious at 18-9.

Greta Yuan was a perfect 3-0 in saber to lead the charge for the women. Miriam Shoman went 2-0 in the weapon, while Aurora Aschettino (foil), Lefu Chen (epee), Karina Dyner (epee), and Kayla Alcebar (saber) also recorded a pair of victories.

Both Oliver Hu and Anders Yu went 3-0 in foil for the men, while Farr Dickson (foil), Steven Grams (epee), Vincent Hong (saber), Jerry Pan (saber), and Ajit Sivakumar (epee) each posted two wins in their respective weapons.

The Violets were not as successful in the second round, as both squads were edged by St. John's. The women fell 15-12 and the men were defeated 16-11.

Yuan posted another pair of victories, as did Aschettino and Dyner. Polly Adler also chipped in with a pair of victories to help the foil squad to a 5-4 victory over the Red Storm.

For the men, Grams' 3-0 record helped the epee squad to a 6-3 win with Sivakumar contributing two of those victories. No other Violet earned more than one win against the Red Storm.

In the day's finale against Wagner, both teams were victorious by identical 19-8 scores.

Claudia Meyer and and Annika Santos both went 3-0 in foil, with Emily Luo going 2-0. Chen and Dyner each went 2-1 in epee, with Yuan posting another two wins in saber.

On the men's side, Sivakumar, Dickson and Hu were perfect at 3-0 in their weapons. Grams went 2-0 in epee.

"I was very happy with what I saw from everyone today," Bratton added. "This all bodes well for the season ahead."

The Violets return to action on Sunday, December 8, when they travel to Poughkeepsie, NY, to compete in the Tradition Tournament hosted by Vassar College.
