Another Win for #1 Women’s Basketball

Violets Beat Carnegie Mellon 90-61

New York University's top-ranked women's basketball team improved to 14-0 on the season and 3-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with a 90-61 win at Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday in Pittsburgh, PA.

Caroline Peper scored a game-high 22 points for the Violets while Natalie Bruns notched 15 and Belle Pellecchia had a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double.

NYU shot 54 percent from the field (34-of-63) and a red-hot 56 percent from downtown (14-of-25), largely thanks to Peper who went 6-of-7 from deep. Meanwhile, the Violets held CMU to 33.3 percent shooting (21-of-63) and 31 percent (9-of-29) from three-point range.

The Violets scored the first 13 points of the game, leading 13-0 four minutes in. Carnegie Mellon then closed the gap a bit, but Pellecchia hit a three with 11 seconds left in the first to give NYU a 25-15 advantage after one.

The second quarter was all Peper, as she hit four of her five three-point attempts for 12 points in the frame as NYU won the second 22-12 and took a 47-27 lead into the break.

It was closer in the second half, with NYU out-scoring the Tartans by a total of just nine points across the final two quarters. The Violets' first-half margin proved to be enough, however, as NYU earned its 28th win in the last 29 games dating back to last season.

Peper produced three boards and three assists in addition to her game high in scoring while Bruns added six rebounds, four assists, three blocks and a steal to her 15 points.

Mary Kate Fahey and Morgan Morrison contributed eight points apiece as well.

The Violets return home to Manhattan's John A. Paulson Center on Friday, January 19, against Washington University in St. Louis for another UAA showdown at 5:30pm.
