In a game knotted at 0-0 into the 70th minute, a penalty kick accounted for the only score of the contest as Wesleyan University nipped the visiting New York University Violets 1-0 on Wednesday, September 6, in Middletown, CT.
Lucas Ruehlemann's conversion of the penalty kick at 70:33 followed a yellow card issued to NYU keeper
Luca Mancuso, who was cited for a tripping violation.
That was the only shot that evaded Mancuso, who made five saves before being replaced by
Jackson McCloskey.
The Cardinals outshot the Violets 16-8, 6-4 in shots on goal.
Wesleyan attempted four corner kicks, while NYU did not take any.
Bryce Lexow was responsible for half of the Violets' shots.
Mathis Blanc recorded the shutout for Wesleyan.
"They outplayed us. We just didn't perform well as a team," said Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "They were very physical and we did not have a lot time with the ball. We didn't create many scoring chances."
NYU returns to action this weekend, competing at the Brick City Classic hosted by Rutgers Newark University. The Violets will face The College of New Jersey on Saturday and Rutgers Newark on Sunday. Both matchups are set to begin at 3:30pm.
