The New York University softball team won its University Athletic Association (UAA) four-game series opener against Emory University with a 3-2 comeback victory on Friday, April 7, on Staten Island, NY.
Let by both the pitching and hitting of
Marina Egbert, the Violets were able to eek out the win over the Eagles.
Egbert did not allow an earned run, yet the Violet trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
With one out,
Samantha Burggraf started the game-winning rally with a base hit, and an Eagles' error put the tying run on. Then, with two out,
Sophia Leon's pinch hit bunt single loaded the bases for Egbert...and she delivered the game-tying runs with a single to right center field.
Bella Dunning then knocked in the go-ahead run with a single of her own.
For the first time in the game, NYU had the lead. Now, Egbert was asked to hold that lead in the seventh. She did, but it wasn't easy.
After striking out Emory's leadoff hitter in the frame, a hit and an error put the potential tying and winning runs on base. However, Egbert induced a fielder's choice and then a fly ball to center fielder
Chloe Blanc to nail down the victory.
In winning her team-leading seventh game of the season, Egbert allowed only four hits and struck out seven. She aided her cause with a pair of hits and a walk.
Margaux Lesser also had two knocks as the Violets out-hit the Eagles 9-4.
The teams will go at it again for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12:00pm back at the College of Staten Island.
