Softball Splits in St. Louis

Violets Drop Opener and Win Nitecap at Wash U

The New York University softball team opened its University Athletic Association (UAA) season with a doubleheader in St. Louis, MO, against Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, March 25.

The Violets had their program-record 10-game winning streak snapped in the opener 4-1, but came back to capture the second game 4-2.

NYU opened the scoring in the first game, tallying its only run in the top of the second. Madi Hand led off the inning with a double and came around to score on Bella Dunning's RBI single.

The Bears took the lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings, then added two more in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Marina Egbert started and went the distance for the Violets. She allowed only five hits and a walk in her six innings, while surrendering three earned runs.

The Violets also recorded five hits in the game, with Egbert and Margaux Lesser lacing doubles and Hannah Becker adding a single.

In the nitecap, NYU trailed 2-0 with two outs in the top of the sixth. But, a four-run rally ensued and the Violets went on to victory.

Hand started the rally with a two-out single. Chloe Blanc followed with another single and then pinch-hitter Becker walked.

Mia Lemmon followed with another walk to plate the first run. Then, another pinch hitter, Samantha Burggraf, drove in the tyng and go-ahead runs with another single before Lesser knocked in the final run with another single.

Emily Stone, who started in the circle for NYU, held the lead for the final two innings. She finished the game allowing only those two earned runs and five hits while striking out two.

The two teams square off again on Sunday for another doubleheader beginning at 11:00am central time.
