The New York University men's tennis team narrowly lost to The College of New Jersey on Saturday, March 25, in Ewing, NJ. The Violets now stand 5-3 this season.
The afternoon match was turbulent, with an early NYU lead in doubles play. TCNJ's first doubles team took down NYU's
Zachary Freier and
Alex Yang by a tight 8-6, but NYU's second and third doubles teams responded with wins in their respective matches.
Alex Lee and
Boren Zheng won their #2 doubles match 8-5, as did the #3 doubles team of
Joseph He and
Andy Watterson. Heading into the singles round, NYU stood 2-1 over TCNJ.
However, the Violets' lead was short-lived as TCNJ came back with four singles victories. Yang, Freier, He, and Watterson fell at 1, 2, 4, and 6 singles respectively. Yang saw a particularly close match at #1 singles, bringing his opponent to three sets 7-5, 4-6, 10-5. Zheng won in straight sets at third singles 6-3, 6-4, and at fifth singles
Rumaish Khastgir, in his first and only match of the day, lost only a single game to win 6-0, 6-1. Despite the wins, NYU came up short with four overall wins to TCNJ's five.
The Violets will be back in action next weekend, when they host University Athletic Association (UAA) opponents University of Rochester (Saturday, April 1) and Brandeis University (Sunday, April 2).
