Two days in Florida. Two doubleheader sweeps.
The New York University softball team is now 4-0 in the Sunshine State after sweeping another doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Tuesday, March 14, in Naples, FL.
The Violets defeated Western Connecticut State University 4-3 and St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 2-0 on Tuesday after posting victories over Westfield State University and University of Wisconsin-Superior on Monday.
"We're playing team softball. It takes everyone to win," said Head Coach
Now-Allah James.
Once again it was mostly dominant pitching that carried NYU to the victories.
In the first game,
Angelina Biele pitched five scoreless innings and came back to record the final out in the Violets' 4-3 win.
NYU had taken a 4-0 lead, but the Wolves pushed two across in the sixth and one more in the seventh. James beckoned for his starter to come back in and get the final two outs, bringing Biele in to a base-loaded, one-out jam.
On her second pitch, Biele induced a grounder to shortstop
Emma Aridi, who fired home for a force play. Catcher
Hannah Becker then pegged the ball to
Samantha Burggraf at third base for another force and the clinching play of the game.
Aridi recorded two hits and two RBI in the contest, with
Madi Hand also providing an RBI.
"Everyone is doing the little things it takes to win," James added. "That's what really helps in tight ballgames."
Emily Stone was in the circle for the second game.
The Violets scored single runs in the third and fourth on an RBI single from Aridi and a sacrifice fly from
Lily Candelaria.
Stone pitched into the seventh, but when she got into a jam, loading the bases with two outs, James again went to his bullpen. He brought in
Marina Egbert who struck out the only batter she faced to seal the 2-0 victory.
"This is a game of strategy and I had full trust that Marina would finish the job," Stone said. "I would be nothing without my team. I rely on my teammates, and when we're working together as a unit we're unbeatable."
The Violets' run continues on Wednesday with games against Crown College (9:00am) and SUNY Brockport (1:00pm) back in Naples.
