New York University's men's basketball team fell 80-62 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) matchup at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA on Friday night.
Three Violets scored in double figures in the loss, led by
Spencer Freedman's team-high 14 points.
NYU dropped to 13-6 overall and 2-6 in UAA play with the defeat, splitting the season series with the Tartans after
last weekend's home win.
Despite the loss, the Violets' bench outscored CMU's 18-14 and NYU scored 17 points off turnovers as opposed to the hosts' 12.
New York shot 50.0 percent (12-of-24) in the opening half and 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from deep, trailing by just four (34-30) at the break. But, the Violets' shooting dropped below 32 percent in the second as Carnegie Mellon pulled away.
It was even throughout the first half as
Cinque Stephens' layup with 12:05 on the clock tied the score at 11. NYU fell behind by as many as nine later on, but clawed back and regained the lead (28-27) on a
Michael Savarino finish with 4:05 left.
The Tartans then closed the frame on a 7-2 run to give themselves the halftime advantage.
A Freedman triple put NYU ahead by two, 38-36, early in the second half for its last lead of the night. The Violets came within three multiple times throughout the next 10 minutes, but a pair of RJ Holmes free throws at the 7:17 mark gave CMU a double-digit lead and the hosts didn't look back from there.
Savarino finished with 13 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals while Stephens added 12 points (5-of-7 FG) and five boards of his own.
Zay Freeney chipped in seven points, two assists and two steals and
Quinn Clark had a team-high six rebounds.
NYU will complete its UAA road weekend at Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, February 5, in Cleveland, OH.
